This book is full of drama and angst, and I absolutely love it! Tehereh Mafi excels at creating emotional and physical reactions through her writing, which resonates deeply with me. Her vivid imagery and beautiful prose, combined with a clever use of first-person perspective and journal-like entries, make the narrative and character development especially engaging. I’m a huge fan of unreliable narrators, and Mafi's portrayal of Juliette as one adds a unique and intriguing layer to the story. The way the crossed-out lines in the text reflect Juliette's growing confidence is a brilliant touch.
However, the pacing of this book had some issues. The first half felt slow and uninteresting, with too much focus on Juliette and Adam's relationship, which didn't captivate me due to my lack of investment in Adam. The story only picked up when Warner appeared and the plot gained momentum, but by then, the impact was diminished. Additionally, the side characters lacked depth, which made their situations less emotionally impactful and reduced the overall stakes of the story.
The book has some exciting twists and it’s great to see Juliette start to grasp the bigger picture. Overall, the story sets up some intriguing possibilities for the next book, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes!
